Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” ― HelenKeller.
To appreciate this – we have to sail away from this concrete jungle and dive into Western Ghats. We at “THE KAADBOYS” love to explore the deadly mysteries of Western Ghats and savor its beauty and richness. Western Ghats is in every drop of our blood. I would take immense pleasure in narrating to you the best ever trek I ever had…. Enjoy the read:

Deadly 9GUDDA…

Just the very thought of this trek sends chills down my spine. Muhoortha for this deadly journey was set on 23-Jan-2009 when one of my friends NaraSimha showed me a news paper clipping which said – Bodies of Bangalore students found in Panja Forest region. Those students happened to be Simha’s friends.

Me, without even a word of sympathy – jumped to ask: “Machha when are we going to try this place?”

Response from my friends: “Why not today??”

Yes, the very same day…

We started without guide, without proper preparation (At the end of the trek we were shocked to know that it was an active naxal belt, restricted region and a protected forest as well).

Heights of safety and preparation: Key chain compass. Truly insane, we do realize it now.

[By the way, 9Gudda is one of the deadly dense forests in the Subramanya range. It touches 3 districts: DK, Hassan and Chikmagalur.]

I would say this was my real trek – rest all were just wild walks. I am sure you will agree with me at the end of this narrative.

On the same night: 6 souls wandering in majestic – Narasimha, Venka, Vathsa, Shivu, Vijay and myself. Finally boarded the Ordinary Red KSRTC bus[TONY] at 11PM.

It was almost a roller coaster ride in the Shiradi Ghats region. Hats off to the driver’s excellent skills which took us safely to our destination!

After this head reeling journey we got down in Gundya where 4 others joined us: Abhi, Venki, Prash and Jagga.

We were welcomed by these words of a passerby: “Last month people from Bangalore came here to trek and lost their life”. What a heartening welcome note 😉

Paying no heed to all such instincts, we entered the dragon’s mouth: Kabbinale forest.

Day1: 24th Jan 2009

There was no proper route, in fact no route at all. All we had was a flow map of River Adda Hole. Only thing we knew was to just keep on moving along the North direction – until we spot the jeep track next to 9 hillocks. This jeep track connects 2 estates owned by Khoday’s group – that was our destination.

In our journey northwards, I guess we were making our way upwards (not sure hell or heaven). We had no idea that we were lost deep inside the jungle. Let alone human intervention, I don’t suppose even any of the wild animals would have traveled the path that we took. It was getting dark, we were completely exhausted – 10 people with a street dog, little food, no network – late realization that we were lost! But a kind of peculiar feeling we witnessed – living the moment with anxiety and curiosity.

Finally somehow we found a rivulet; felt God created it just now – specially for us.

We drank this sweet water and prepared Maggie at this spot (This would definitely make a thrilling “Maggie story” I suppose). Spent the whole night here – put up tent and camp fire. As usual, sentry system – had a sound sleep.

Day2: 25th Jan 2009

The new dawn began; journey took a kick start at sharp 7AM. In less than an hour all our water bottles were empty. Our immediate goal was to find water. We traveled crawling, jumping, sitting, rolling, climbing – crossing many belts in search of water. Taking rest after every 20-25 steps…later which reduced to 10-15. Felt like as if we are struck in never ending range of continuous hillocks – was a real enigma. Things were repeating all over again. Each breath was audible, each step was countable. The real thrill of getting lost in Western Ghats came now.

We were smiling…we were lost.

As you can see in this picture, start of one hillock marked the end of the other:-

At last around 12AM we could hear the sound of water flowing nearby. When we neared the source, we could see that there is no path to reach waters – it was a deadly deep steep – a single wrong move and you would be gone. But we badly wanted to quench our thirst – nothing stopped us from reaching out to the rivulet. Somehow reached the water; felt as if we were drinking imported wine. There came shocking news when Jagga shouted: “Something has bitten my head, look on the tree, check out what is it”. Somebody went back and declared “dude it’s a snake”.

We were absolutely blank and our immediate botheration was – how on earth we carry a body all the way to destination. He was repeatedly telling “I am going to die…somebody inform my parents” – we almost died to instill faith in him. We made sure he does not sleep off. He still fights with me on the PJ I cracked : “Hogli bidu machha, I guess this is the first experience for that snake too – to locate a human and bite”.

We started moving again. Fortunately or unfortunately around 3:30PM somebody’s mobile caught network (that NOKIA mobile caught PANJA tower network) – that genius hurriedly called 100 and told “we are lost in 9Gudda and one person is bitten by a snake – please send a chopper to rescue us”. However in least expectation of any rescue, we kept on moving, [carrying the snake bitten friend with the help of a bamboo stick]. To our surprise, we finally got the glimpse of our destination. We reached…yeah… We reached.

We successfully cracked the mystery of 9Gudda by ourselves. Time showing 5:25PM

AT Saraswathi ESTATE:

We drank water, danced, jumped, hugged, and what not – it was truly a second birth. Felt like we were the happiest people on earth at that moment. And our friend was still alive 😉

We requested one and only worker in the estate to take our friend to hospital. But on seeing the photos of snake he said

“Idu entha aagudilla, malkobardu ashte. malgidare visha talege eroduntu”.

This brought us a great relief.

He took the 4 who joined us at Gundya to hospital and we 6 started photo session.

We started walking towards another estate (Lakshmi) which is 8kms away from the one where we stayed. We had covered almost 5kms when we saw a machine-modified jeep (which used in mud races) coming towards us. It initially passed us, but soon took an U-turn and stopped in front of us. The jeep driver ordered in an authoritative tone: “get into the jeep, I have come to pick u guys”. We thought that those 4 guys must have sent this jeep. But we were terribly wrong. It was sent by the police –

He introduces himself as “Vikram Gowda“. He said “why you people came here…?You could have gone somewhere else. There are many other Places to trek. I was the one who found the dead bodies of students last month. Only skeleton was there….”

Followed by “Police from 3 districts is waiting for you, have a great time now”. The 100 call had made the all trick…#WTF

The jeep stopped at the entrance of Lakshmi estate – we all got down one by one. Police were standing on either sides of the jeep in long rows – around 20 to 25 policemen were there. It was like a standing ovation and welcome for us -VVIP treatment. What happened later – none of us remember exactly. But here are some dialogues which I could recollect:

*Restricted forest and don’t posses permission letter.

*Active Naxalite belt.

*Encounter them.

*Write down all addresses with phone numbers.

*Is this the purpose your parents send you to colleges?

On top of that, there was a rumor that a group of guys from Bangalore raped a girl and murdered her. This made the situation still worse for us. Finally the police let us go after recording all our statements in written. We called Mudigere jeep driver to come and pick us from Lakshmi estate. But he refused saying that there are elephants problem in the night times. We wondered if it was true – because since past two days we could only spot fresh animal shit.

So we had to spend that night in the estate itself. We got a new friend there – Shhantaraju , estate supervisor. He prepared chitranna for us. It was more delicious than chicken biryani as we had not even smelled rice for 3 days. Next day we reached Mudigere and met those 4 friends. After explaining all that happened, they just said “We missed it!”

Finally back home – We were alive 🙂 But we had become hardcore trekkers.

We started a facebook page “Kaad Boyz” (it was named “chaaranigaru” initially). Our peculiarity lies in the fact that we decide upon our trekking spot only at Majestic Bus Terminal – juz a few minutes before we start…. Most of the times it depends on the availability of the buses too….

We ourselves will have very little clue as to where we will be landing the next day – of course greater uncertainties lies ahead (which the Mother Nature will treasure for us as always – it’s thrilling to solve her riddles). “Har baar prakruthi ke baahon mein jaa girna hi ek khubsoorat anubhav hai…” We guyz, here at Kaadboyz would love to literally GET LOST amidst the Jungles n Mountains!

We have almost covered entire WesternGhats regions of Karnataka… looking forward for a

Other parts in the country. join us 🙂 move with us. To get the photos stories to more screens around the City and may be inspire a few more people to explore, discover and seek out changes in the world beyond our doorstep.
